Heffner Entrepreneurial Fellowship

SUPPORT FOR ENTREPRENEURIAL INTERNSHIPS

The Heffner Entrepreneurship Internship Endowment supports up to 5 undergraduate students with up to $2,500 each to acquire and complete an entrepreneurship-related internship the summer following their junior or senior year. The purpose is to encourage students interested in entrepreneurship to find and accept a business or entrepreneurial-related internship so they can put entrepreneurial skills into practice through real world experience.

Though the optimal student is in his or her junior year, a senior may apply, and does not need to already have a secured internship, however encouraged, to receive the funding they will have to complete one that satisfies the requirement. If you don’t exactly meet the above requirements you may apply and encouraged to as there may be flexibility on the selection depending on the final pool of applicants.

The funding is made available to help defer moving, travel, housing or related costs of completing an internship geographically away from the University of Miami and the student’s hometown who demonstrates the need. After completion of the internship, the student will be required to submit documented expenses (receipts) for reimbursement (housing, travel, utilities) no later than 4 months after the ending of the internship.

The internship support funding is only available to undergraduate students involved in entrepreneurship at the Miami Herbert Business School in some way (e.g. entrepreneurship major/minor, or completion of MGT353 or other entrepreneurship courses at UM, or participation in the 2020 Business Plan Competition). Students will be selected by a panel, including the endowment donor, based on the best fit with the objectives of the program.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE 2020 HEFFNER FELLOWSHIP

NOTE:

Unfortunately, due to the current outbreak, fluid situation and difficulty/limitations in travel, the 2020 Heffner Fellowships have been cancelled.  If you have already submitted your write-up and you are still an undergraduate student in the Spring 2021, we will consider your submission.  If you are interested in applying in the Spring 2021, please check with us then for the deadline.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY WRITE-UPS AT THIS TIME.

Thank you for your understanding.  Stay well and healthy.

General Information:  If you are interested in this funding for summer 2021, please apply then (deadline to be updated in Spring 2021) with a brief write-up description of the internship opportunity you are pursuing for the summer and how it fits with your development/entrepreneurial aspiration, need (or, if there is more than one, indicate that).  Please submit this write-up to the contact us information provided below.  We suggest a description, up to, but less than, one full page.  To apply, make sure to indicate (required) your name, email address, phone number(s), hometown, academic year, major, and entrepreneurship courses or other competition activities in which you’ve participated, as well as the location/brief description of the expected internship.

The deadline to submit your write-up by email is TBD (Spring 2021). Please specify in the email's subject line: HEFFNER submission and email it to mbsentrepreneurship@miami.edu.

The endowment has a geographic preference that the internship be 50 miles or more away from the University of Miami, and/or the student’s hometown, with the intention of helping offset expenses of travel, housing, etc. away from home. The decision committee will seek to notify the selected students by phone and email prior to the end of the semester.

The selected students should plan on attending the 2021 Miami Innovation Adventure/Business Plan Competition Finals in order to receive their certificates and meet the donor.  The 2021 Business Plan Competition Finals will take place on TBD.
