The Finance Department is pleased to announce this year’s competition to be invited to join a select group of Business School students, the Bermont/Carlin Scholars – exceptional individuals who are interested in learning all they can about investment banking, wealth management, and the related investment industries. Activities of the group have been graciously underwritten by Richard Bermont and Adam Carlin, principals of the Bermont/Carlin Group, a local Morgan Stanley/Smith Barney affiliate.

Who's it For?

The Bermont-Carlin Scholars are exceptionally strong, full-time undergraduate students in the Miami Herbert Business School who are interested in learning about the investments industry through a series of events that will be begin in the Fall of 2024 and end with the New York trip on March 10-13, 2025. The selection process is competitive and requires a minimum GPA of 3.6 to apply. You must also have completed a minimum of 45 credits as of January 2025, and be set to graduate no earlier than December, 2026, but no later than May, 2027 (i.e. this program is focused on sophomores). Students graduating in December 2027 or May 2028 are ineligible for this year’s program, and should apply next year, even if they have sophomore standing as a result of extra credits. As of the application date, you must also either have completed or be enrolled in FIN 302, or be eligible to enroll in Spring '25. In order to be selected as a Bermont Carlin Scholar in the Spring, you must have completed FIN 302 or be enrolled in the course as of Spring ’25.

In order to apply, you must be willing to attend a mandatory training session from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesday December 4. A two to three-hour video on collecting data from a Bloomberg terminal will be provided before the session, and the session will cover how to value a public company using data from comparable firms. You must also be prepared to work on a mandatory assignment that will ask you and a partner to write a research report on a firm of your choice over the winter break.

We will do an initial cut of the applicants before classes resume in January 2025. Students selected to remain in contention to be named Bermont Carlin Scholars must complete a mandatory all-day training on Saturday, February 1st, and Sunday, February 2nd, for Wall Street Prep[1]. In addition, students will be assigned research on financial firms that will be presented to the group and to current Bermont Carlin Scholars on Saturday, February 15th, and Sunday, February 16th.

The Bermont Carlin Scholars for this academic year will be chosen from those that participate in the student presentations. Scholars will travel to Wall Street during the week of March 10, 2025 to meet with firms in the investment industry and network with industry leaders, alumni, and former program scholars. NOTE: The trip is during Spring Break! We will likely schedule one or two more training sessions on February 22nd and/or March 1st. These training sessions teach the strategies to search for and succeed in obtaining jobs in the investments industry and to provide a foundation to learn the language and substance necessary for interviews in these areas.

To apply for consideration, please complete the application by Friday, November 15, 2024, by 11:59 p.m. Print your unofficial transcript from Cane Link to a .pdf, get a professional (electronic) photo (headshot) (The file format should be .jpg or .jpeg. We can also accept .gif, .bmp, and .png.), a .pdf version of your current resume (in Mergers and Inquisitions format), and your application essay (also a.pdf).

For more information and answers to questions, please contact Professor Mark Shapiro, m.shapiro1@miami.edu or Professor Andrea Heuson, aheuson@miami.edu.

[1] Students who complete the research report but are not selected to continue are welcome to participate in Wall Street Prep as well. It is vital to your success in interviews.
